Yair Etziony – Pipo

Sometime in 2021 Yair Etziony decided to compose a record dedicated to one of his best friends, Pipo. After a year’s work, Yair finished the album, crafting what he calls “the sound of friendship” using different instruments: from analog synths to cutting edge plugins and digital effects.
Celebrating a friendship of more than twenty years, the album represents everything that this friendship is about. The track titles refer to shared memories, places, and associations that have assumed “canonical” status in the course of time. At the same time, the style of the compositions encapsulates the friends’ mutual love for the dark synth sounds of John Carpenter and Autechre.

Yair describes an image that kept recurring in his head while composing the music for the album. He says it felt like “someone standing outside a nice cozy restaurant on a cold rainy night. Gazing at the people enjoying themselves inside, he then leaves, disappearing into the rain.”

A composer, curator, sound artist, and even a startup manager, who is the man who created an album that is a requiem for a dying startup?
Since 2004 Yair Etziony is releasing music on various labels such as Neo Ouija, Spekk False Industries, and Lamour. His music touched many genres such as IDM, Glitch, Ambient, Modern composition, Drone, Techno, and Drum & Bass.
However, it seems that his move from Tel Aviv to Berlin in 2015 had a growing effect on his music which turned lately into a contemporary fusion of all his influence into something that is hard to define and is painfully living in the corridors of our epoch.

“…Profitant des possibilités qu’offre le format numérique, l’Israélien livre, en fin d’album, une pièce (Hashoftim, du nom d’un quartier de Tel Aviv) coupée en trois, parcourue d’une boucle musicale assez travaillée, relayée par quelques pulsations qui se font de plus en plus présentes et ouvragées au fil du triptyque. Cette évolution peut se trouver aussi sur un simple morceau, avec une pulsation assez basique qui prend des atours nettement plus riches au mitan du titre (Is Progress Possible In Science ?).”

A closer listen
Pipo may be a tribute to a friend, but it’s a shadowy tribute, with stated inspirations including the work of John Carpenter.  Yair Etziony‘s album flirts with dark ambience on its way to the midnight club”
